Cellulose Sponge Cloths

The best thing in a disposables aisle is usually the thing that stops you buying disposables. This is a cloth of wood cellulose and cotton, and it holds about fifteen times its own weight in water. It wipes a counter, mops a spill and dries the sink area, and then it goes in the wash instead of in the bin. It is stiff and board like when dry, which is normal. Run it under the tap and it is soft and absorbent in two seconds.

• No polyester, no nylon, no synthetic microfibre, so it sheds no plastic into the wash water, which is the quiet reason a microfibre cloth is not the sustainable option it is sold as
• No dye, no print, no antibacterial treatment, no fragrance
• Machine washable with the regular load, or boil it in water for five minutes to freshen it
• About nine months of daily use per cloth, which is roughly fifteen rolls of kitchen towel it replaces
• When it finally goes soft and thin, cut it up and put it in the compost pit, where it breaks down in about eight weeks
