Details

A Kolhapuri made the way the craft actually specifies. The upper is hand-braided goat leather over a buffalo leather sole, tanned with bark and myrobalan rather than chrome, and stitched with leather thread. There is no nail and no adhesive anywhere in the shoe, which is why a good pair outlives several pairs of moulded sandals. It starts stiff. Ten or fifteen wears in, the sole flexes, the braid relaxes and the pale tan turns towards a deep honey colour that keeps going for years. Every pair differs slightly because each is cut and braided by one artisan.

  • Hand-braided goat leather upper, buffalo leather sole in three stitched layers
  • Vegetable tanned with bark and myrobalan, no chrome salts
  • Stitched with leather thread, no nails and no glue
  • Sole layers can be opened and a new bottom layer stitched in
  • Made in Kolhapur and Athani by artisan families paid per pair, not per hour
  • No synthetic sole, no factory-printed grain
